Modernity in the Sephardi Diaspora: The Case of Ottoman Izmir

Modernity in the Sephardi Diaspora: The Case of Ottoman Izmir

Dina Danon, Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies at Binghamton University, will give a lecture on Wednesday, November 1. Using the Sephardi community of Ottoman Izmir as a case study, this talk will trace how “modernity” was imagined and constructed in a longstanding Jewish community in the Islamic world. Drawing on a large body of previously untapped Ladino archival material, the talk will underscore how the view from the Islamic world invites us to rethink prevailing conceptual paradigms of Jewish modernity that have been governed largely by the study of European Jewries.

This lecture is FREE and open to the public.
