Klezmer at the Conservatory

The Trumansburg Conservatory of Fine Arts is proud to announce an all klezmer show on Wednesday, May 29th from 8-10pm featuring Daniel Kahn and the Painted Bird. Daniel Kahn concocts furious, tender, electrifying and revolutionary Alienation Klezmer. With the Painted Bird, he presents a variety of passionate songs inspired in part by the struggles of Jewish revolutionaries at the turn of the century, and in part by his own intense desire for a better world. The Painted Bird has brought “Yiddish Punk Cabaret” to rock clubs, festivals and shtetls, from Berlin to Boston, Leningrad to Louisiana. The band has been referred to as “The Yiddish Pogues,”

Opening act Two-Shekel Swing and their unique blend of Swing and shtetl nostalgia will have you clapping, stomping and singing along to some of your old favorites, reimagined with spirit, flair and a little schtick. The group is led by fiddler and vocalist, Yoni Avi Battat, whose fresh arrangements draw on his love for gypsy Jazz and klezmer repertoire. Two-Shekel Swing celebrates Yiddishkeit with a fresh energy that will get the whole mishpokhe dancing to the beat!
