Join us for a special Shabbat supplement to the Rabbi Scott Glass 40th Anniversary Lecture Series: Jonathan Levine, Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Colgate University will join us on Shabbat HaHodesh. Services begin at 10 AM. His topic will be, Witnessing a New Moon.
In Mishnaic times, witness testimony of the new moon was used to proclaim the beginning of each month. The calendar has long since been rid of its dependence on observers and observations, but people have nevertheless devoted considerable attention to the Moon over the intervening millennia. The Moon has, over time, told us much about our place in the cosmos and the history of the Solar System. In our own era, space missions have led to a revolution in our understanding of the Moon, its history, and the history of our Earth as well. Professor Levine will describe the new vision of the Moon that has emerged in recent years.
