Our presenter will be Daniel R. Schwarz, author of the well-regarded “Imagining the Holocaust” in which he discusses books and films about the Holocaust, including Wiesel’s brilliant “Night.” Daniel Schwarz will discuss why “Night” is still among the most important Holocaust memoirs and discuss its historical role in bringing the Holocaust to the attention of American readers. He will discuss whether the distinction between the originating events and how we remember events is relevant to discussing Wiesel, and whether we should consider “Night” a documentary novel or a memoir. He will also draw upon his personal relationship with Wiesel with whom he spent time on Wiesel’s Ithaca visits, and with whom he has had a correspondence.
Daniel Schwarz is Frederic J. Whiton Professor of English and Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University, where he has been a faculty member for 49 years; he has been a Temple Beth-El member since 1974.
This lecture is part of the 2016 Adult Education Series, honoring Rabbi Scott Glass for his 40 years of service to Temple Beth-El.
