June 5 is Shavuot, and we’re doing something very special at TVO to mark the occasion this year. There’s a tradition of reading the Book of Ruth at this time. In the face of hardship and grief, Ruth chooses to travel with her mother-in-law Naomi to the older woman’s home village. There she is given sanctuary, welcomed as an immigrant, and given the opportunity to create a new life for herself. With the klezmer violin of Jake Shulman-Ment accompanying us, we’ll take a new look at Ruth’s story; explore our own stories of migration; hear from TVO members who have been supporting refugees in our community; and learn how we can help those efforts. Then we'll share a light meal and delight in still more music from Jake, continuing our journey through parts of the Jewish diaspora. Join us for this time of music, learning, personal exploration, and tikkun olam.
There is no fee to participate in this program. However, donations will be requested during the evening to support the creative work of our featured musician and the efforts of the Ithaca Sanctuary Alliance.
